Alexis Charitsis in the Greek Parliament
The government identifies the consolidation of national security with the purchase of new weapons.
However, this is nothing more than a sterile, doomed to fail, one-dimensional logic. A destructive logic.
Real power is based on diplomacy, international legitimacy, social stability and an economy capable of supporting national strategy in an international environment, in the long term and a multifaceted way.
Real power is based on the struggle for Peace.
No sense of security is instilled in society by diverting public resources to opaque over-armaments.
The concept of “security” is multidimensional, derives from a strong welfare state, decent wages, job security and the strengthening of labor rights.
Security depends on social cohesion, justice, functional public infrastructure and protection against the climate crisis.
No battleship can protect citizens from the floods in Thessaly area or the inability to find a bed in a decent public hospital.
Let us speak up clearl and loud: We will not undermine the country’s fiscal future with our own vote in the Parliamentary session.
We will not undermine social cohesion on the altar of a new cold war with our own vote.
No party on the Left should give in and legitimize the way the Right attempts to get out of its own impasse. Over-armament megalomania is not security, Right-wing patriotism is not real patriotism and nationalist lionization towards Turkey has already shown its limits.
New Left is standing against the militaristic impasse of the government. National security is not achieved by endless armament spending, but with good neighborly relations, respect for International Law and consistent diplomatic strategy, a coherent plan and self-confidence.
In order to strongly push this alternative agenda, all forces of the progressive left opposition have to be unwavering and united.
