Another dead  young worker: it is not an “accident”, it’s a political choice

Another human life was lost yesterday at a construction site, this time at the “Little Athens” project in Elliniko, Athens. A 25-year-old worker lost his life after falling from the second floor of a building that is under construction. The workers complain that there were no basic safety measures at the site,  handrails or railings.

At the same time, as the workers’ union confirms, the young worker was working on a Saturday, in conditions of  overwork that violate every law, in order to meet the schedules of the multinational construction company.

Just a few days ago, a 58-year-old worker also  lost his life at the railway main station  in Piraeus, while lifting heavy equipment.  Another  «accident at work» although workers have been complaining for years about the lack of personnel, equipment and safety checks.

This is not  a “misfortune”,but  an employer’s crime, that also  weights on  the  government which initiated  the 13hour working day,  left the labor market uncontrolled, remains  mute while workers die for the profits of contractors.

The New Left supports the mobilizations of the workers in Elliniko who are going on  a 24-hour strike on Tuesday, December 9, as well as the general  construction-wide strike on Wednesday, December 10.
