The New Left was established in early December 2023, initially as an 11-member parliamentary group in the Greek Parliament. It further developed into a fully established political party, with local branches across the country and a strong presence in the trade-unions, the feminist movement, the youth struggles, as well as the human-rights movement in Greece.
The New Left is a party of the radical, feminist and ecological Left and part of the progressive pro-European Left forces in Europe. We want to represent and strengthen the values of the modern European, democratic Left, setting social justice, climate justice and the strengthening of democracy and rights as the three main objectives of our political action, as presented in the Party’s founding declaration.
The New Left is being part of the Left political family in Europe and the Party of the European Left.
Alexis Charitsis
President of the New Left
Alexis Charitsis was born in 1977 and grew up in the city of Kalamata, Peloponnese.
He has been elected President of the New Left since its first congress in November 2024,being President of the NEW LEFT Parliamentary Group since December 2023.
Alexis Charitsis is a Member of the Greek Parliament , elected in the district of Messinia. He was elected twice, while a candidate with SYRIZA (July 2019 -June 2023 and June 2023-November 2023).
During his first term as a Member of Parliament, he served as SYRIZA’s spokesperson, since 2020 he has been Head of Development and Investments. Between 2015 and 2019, he served as Minister of the Interior , Deputy Minister of Economy and Development (responsible for the Public Investment Program , industrial issues and the Development Strategy), Deputy Minister of Economy, Development and Tourism and Secretary General of Public Investments .
He was a member of the Central Committee of SYRIZA from 2013 to November 2023.
A graduate of the Department of Electrical Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens, he followed postgraduate studies at the University of Manchester, specializing in Renewable Energy Sources.
He has worked in the private sector on energy issues, both in Greece and abroad.
